An unnatural love of bacon

Velcro4's going to be out of town for the holidays, so the chances of losing momentum and never going on a date are quite high. If there's one thing that I've learned in this year of online dating, it's that optimism only goes so far.

For today's oddity, I've chosen a bit from JimClak's profile:

"I really don't like filling these things out. Let's see, I drink much more coffee than is healthy, I smoke an amazing amount of cigarettes per day, and I have an unnatural love of bacon. I also studied holistic health for a year."

I never understand people like this: they've studied health, and yet their lives are anything but healthy. Can anyone explain this to me?

It turns out the part that was missing from his holistic lifestyle was bacon. *shrug*

The simple explanation, I suppose, if a person is knowingly consuming a substance which is dangerous to their health is that this action is a manifestation of self-loathing, and in an extreme version it would be what Freud called "the death wish."

Another possibility is that in his "holistic health" education he may have learned some things that are not true. I think there is a growing tendency nowadays to distrust Western medicine. People who have had negative encounters with the health care system, with rude and inconsiderate doctors, and with medications that only make you feel worse, it is an understandable reaction.

Thus, it would not surprise me at all if there was some sort of "holistic" health course that taught the mantra of "everything bad is actually good for you" and that all you need to do is drink some of this magic potion and you'll be fine no matter how shitty your diet is.

There was a time when you, Superquail, were interested in holistic schooling, wasn't there?
